On the Comic...

"This is a Story.  In it, you will find many Interesting Persons caught up in Events Beyond Their Control.  They will perform Debatably Heroic Deeds and make many Caustic and Incisive Remarks while Pursuing Their Destiny."

So. Seriously. What is WildHunt about?

Good question. I've been working on it since 1998, and I still couldn't really tell you what it's about. The story's not finished even now, and there's an old piece of Norse wisdom that, adapted to this situation, would tell you to 'Not judge the story before it is told.'  Nevertheless, you deserve -some- info for coming here, and I shall endeavor to provide.

WildHunt, at its core, focuses on three bounty hunters, the dearest of friends, and the events that transpire once they end up taking a certain job, and altering the course of their lives forever. You won't find any 'good guys' or 'heroes' here. I adore villains, and many a good number of them, both charming and not, will grace these pages. My main characters aren't 'goody-goody'; they do and act as their nature suits them, and running around Doing Good Deeds is most definitely not in their natures. They collect bounties, for the money, and for the thrill -- not really for the good of the Free Realm. Nothing more, nothing less. If you're expecting some heroic tale... you probably won't find what you're looking for in WildHunt. It's a very long, complicated tale... but I hope you'll enjoy watching the threads unravel.

On the Free Realm...

The Free Realm was created as a result of several rulers from various Kingdoms all going after one unclaimed bit of land. The battles were monstrous, and thousands upon thousands of warriors lost their lives. Eventually, the many kings decided that it wasn't worth it, and all retreated, leaving the land unclaimed by any. Eventually, murderers, cutthroats, and all manner of degradents flooded to the place, to escape justice. Consequently, the 'Realm is a nest of bounty hunters, and anyone skilled as such can easily make a living there. The Kingdom folk don't really like 'Realmers, so they tend to keep to themselves -- bounty hunters are incredibly rare outside the 'Realm, and many are persecuted if they venture outside their own 'borders'.

On Technology...

The folk of the world have studied magick and science, and merged the two into a workable whole. You'll find electricity, iceboxes, water heaters and modern bathrooms (harnessed from, say, lightning magic channeled into copper wires, or a perpetual heating/cooling magic cast on a container) right next to a spell to keep water levels lower than a certain point, or door wards that recognize only the specified owner of a house. Main electricity lines are buried underground, to keep the land pristine.

On the Monetary System...

A note for those who may be slightly confused, or curious:

A Copper is worth $1. A Half-Moon is roughly equivalent to $25, a full Moon $50, a Sun $150 and a Crown right about $300.

There are other denotions of currency, but these are the most common.

On the Subject of Everything Else...

(Consider this the FAQ section.)

1. What do the runes in the WildHunt logo mean? "Hallowed be the Game". The meaning will become clear in time...

2. What's a 'Wolf's Head'? Anglo-Saxon law (apparently still used in some places) stated that some criminals, whose offenses were especially savage, would be dubbed warg, which means 'wolf'. The outlaw would 'be held to be a wolf and . . . be proclaimed "wolf's-head"'.

Those bounties in WH that are especially sought-after or need to be brought down are given Wolf's Head status, though the bounty may be put out as 'pending' while the bounty offices decide exactly how much the upped bounty will be for. During Pending status, the cost of the bounty head jumps, but it almost always doubles when status is granted.

3. 'Sanguin'? They just look like wolves!  Yes, well. Carried over from a set of races/species I created ages upon ages ago. Very similar to Earth wolves in pack heirarchy, behavior, and such, these creatures are gifted with telepathy. They are, generally, a little larger than Earth wolves on average. Most Sanguin packs keep to themselves, but this pack -- thanks to Fia -- has an agreement with the town of Saffir Rhyd. This has thus altered their behavior somewhat, as, with a Pact to watch out for the town, they are obliged to attack where they might have avoided.

For the record, I love wolves, I really do. They're beautiful, shy creatures -- please do not take any viciousness on the part of the Sanguin as reflecting on real wolves.

4. Would you consider posting the prose version of your story online?  I have considered this, but am strongly set against it at this time. Should I ever get it compiled into a hard copy, I'll be sure to post the information on the site, as well as how you can get ahold of a copy. :)

More to come ~ feel free to email if there's a question you'd like to see added!

On the Creator...

Oh, I get to talk about myself, now? Meep. Well, let's see. My name's Brandy Woods, I'm 24, been drawing all my life, live in Louisiana, USA, and... stuff. I run a knife-and-sword business called WolfRaven Blades, which rather needs a website, if I'd ever get around to it. When not working on the business or WH, I spend a lot of time playing those gosh-darn video games (mostly RPGs; some strategy, a couple fighters, and various other genres). Or doing the old-fashioned 'reading books' thing. I wish I had broadband.

Iffin you want to contact me, there's a link at the bottom of any page, in the copyright info. Email addy is isskottr at hotmail dot com. Feedback is much appreciated.

If you want me to draw something for you, yes, I take commissions. Details here.

One of these days, I plan to fully turn WH into a 'real' comic, published on hard, cruel paper.

I also want to turn it into an illustrated novel -- one of the really thick ones that, as Neil Gaiman said, automatically qualify as Art, because you could stun a burglar with them. Or, failing that, a series of small, pulp-novel-like/novella things. (Also illustrated. Of course.) The comic is adapted from text stories I've been working on since the late '90s, and said stories are about as refined now as I can make them, for the moment... So I figured that Now was just as good a time as Someday to get the stories started.
